Merlo 40.7 getting oil and water mixed ( deutz engine)

We’re having a bit of a mare at the moment. Merlo has 10k hrs, pushing oil water mix out of header tank. Anyone know how to isolate the water side of the heat exchanger, try and prove whether is exchanger or head gasket ?
Has been suggested exchanger is most likely culprit but would be nice to prove before suffering the inevitable Merlo rip off ....

The symptoms sound like the oil cooler. I have had it happen on two Merlos.
The cost of parts (October 2019) from an engine specialist was £410.70 for the oil cooler and seals.
The labour was about 4 hours which was mostly flushing the mayonnaise out of the system.
Hope this helps.

Hi just wondering did you solve the problem? I have exactly the same issue with mine

It will either be oil cooler or the seals, between cooler and housing behind it. Or seals between housing and block. The oil is pressure fed, up through pushrod, to lubricate valve. Meaning there is not a pressurised gallery going through head gasket.

Take cooler off, blank one hole in either water or oil side. A piece of rubber, a bit of wood or metal on top and held down with a G clamp. Put pressurised air in and it will come out other section of cooler, if it is burst. It is fairly common for them to go.

ok thanks for the help. We have the cooler off now. Pressure checked ok but big seal looks very tired. Going to order a new seal kit and try that first.
