Don’t know about towing , when I had one on demo in 2011 ish they wouldn’t stand bye the warranty if I put a 6.25cum bucket on it for grain
Quite liked it to drive

Was enquiring too. Too heavy for field work? Can it comfortably lift 3 ton of wheat?

Went with a 42.7 cs 140 instead as it’s just under 8t. The 55.9 was 10.5t with similar engine and hydraulics to the 42.7 so felt cumbersome in comparison. It’s replaced a 550-80 Jcb and whilst not as heavy duty, it’s not far off. The gearbox is brilliant.

Don't go for the biggest capacity bucket: buy a toe-tip or a 4 in 1 from Merlo themselves, you will load lorries much much faster than with almost any size conventional bucket as there is so much time saved by not tipping and boom extending. It's hard to describe but it adds up over many cycle times.

I can load artic in 4and half mins if lorry is in the shed and not toe tip and boom fully in

No doubt but you will do it even faster with a toe tip/4 in 1. You only have to put the bucket over the top and swoosh it's tipped out in a blink. It was sceptical like you- just gimme a bigger handler and bucket but a friend showed me them loading trucks with a Volvo loading shovel and the toe tip makes a big difference despite the loss of capacity.

Can’t see how it would be quicker as you would have a smaller bucket for a start and would probably cost twice as much to buy toe tip bucket

Any one experience with 4 cbm bucket (3 ton) of wheat on 55.9?

4cbm on a 550-80 which is roughly the same machine. 9 buckets to load a hgv. Keep your tyre pressures up otherwise you’ll get a sway on when the buckets up.

Toe-tips are far more expensive and weigh a lot more. They are made for loading shovels really. And you don’t need to boom extend on 550-80 or 55.9 with a big bucket so they won’t save you that time either.
