Merlo 32.6 2012, the carriage tilts forward when there is weight on, not all the time but sometimes is really bad, been looking and there is a lock valve on the ram at the top, is this likely to be the problem, can they be repaired or does the whole thing need changing?

Eagleye is right. Easy way to check is ouch the rod of the ram all the wat out. Slowly release the hose that pushes the rod in and put it in a container the pressure the rod out again with it disconnected. If oil flows out it’s you seals on the rod that are leaking. Not a major job to re seal them. Hardest will be gland removal.

If you can measure the seals accurately many bearing/ seal places can find ones that will replace them. Just did a dipper arm ram on my 360 cat digger. Dealer was at 1700 and change fir a seal kit. Specialised seal business in the city was under 400. I can remember using a company called bbt. Berkshire bearing an transmission from newbury bermushier. Great service and that man could source anything.

hi it’s a difficult one to diagnose. Could be tilt ram seal, tilt ram check valve, compensation block failure or compensation ram seals

I would get a engineer to bypass the comp valve temporarily and test. which will rule out the valve and comp ram. Before spending money at the front

Why would it be anything other than ram seals or the lock/check valve on ram???

Assuming ram seals are good the check valve should be holding the pressure in the ram, should be able to put a full load on it and remove the hoses completely off the ram if ram seals and check valve are good🤔 so to my mind it cant be anything futher back down the line to comp ram or valve block. 🤷‍♂️

Now if it was not self leveling properly then yes comp ram seals or comp ram valves would be suspect.
