Metacam alternatives

As we all know Metacam (Meloxicam) is an excellent pain reliever and anti inflammatory drug in livestock, however, it is not cheap and worse still, the injectable form has a short shelf life, so it's not practicable to have a bottle "sitting on the shelf" for an emergency.

So, last night we had a ewe in pretty poor order after lambing twins, (one dead one alive) over the previous night. She was exhibiting massive panting yet obviously feeling cold, as she moved under a heat lamp put in for the 2 lambs as she is fostering one too. Late on yesterday eve, I had given her a shot of AB earlier , she had received some twin lamb drench and I also gave 40ml of calcijet under the skin. Before I went to bed, she was up a bit and massively hungry but panting like a train still.

So, no Metacam in stock, a neighbour had some but it had gone manky, and no way was I calling a Vet. Quick online check on human medicines for a sheep and found a mention that Paracetomol and Ibuprofen can cause side effects in some animals so ruled out... but Asprin is often a safe option for animals.

I was not going out to harvest willow bark at 23.45, so I found a couple of asprin still here, calculated a dose and ground up 1,25 asprin tablets, and mixed with a dribble of drench and water and ?. Did not expect to see her alive to be honest.

Herself was up 3 times overnight looking at another ewe and reported at 7am that the ewe was still alive!! Yay! Looked in on her at 8am and she was up and was then eating cake happily, as were the suckling lambs, still a bit of panting, but a very different animal. ...

So in this case, it may have been the Calcijet that helped... Dunno. BUT, what alternatives have other folks used, "in extremis" to help a poorly animal for pain relief and to bring down a temp?

I know that some recommend turmeric and stuff for join and pain relief, but I am thinking a more pharmaceutical type product....

Shouldn’t use humans medication in animals

I am afraid my reaction to that at Midnight when I have a poorly animal is ?

I am well aware of the rules and requirements of drug use in livestock, and in my honest opinion, relief of suffering of an animal is my first priority.

I do not believe a relatively benign product like asprin (salicylate ) is harmful to the animal, and there is zero chance of it getting into the food chain as the animal is under Withdrawal for the antibiotics. If she dies, she will be an incinerator.

Next time I will get some willow bark....

Why don’t you just buy a bottle metacam at start of each lambing?? You should always be using it if you’ve had a difficult lambing. If you’ve only got a few ewes (?) go halves with a neighbour maybe!?!

£80-90/bottle... 'nuff said. Smaller bottles, or a solid form for oral admin would be useful.

Yep just 20 odd this time I think after a big thinning out of numbers after last time :)

20 sheep - I get the dilemma! Another option is many vets will dispense you 1, 2 or 3 individual doses if you ask, which would keep in fridge for lambing period. Got to better than grinding up whatever human painkillers you may have in bathroom and guessing a dose.

£30/syringe!! That is what they charged us for 5ml..... I did query it and had a modest discount.

If we were dealing with 100 ewes, yes, or even 50. then have a bottle in, the same as I have AB's here for the cattle and sheep. But these are relatively inexpensive, and using a fresh needle for extraction each time, it will have a reasonable shelf life.

I asked a Vet on the shelf life of Metacam after broaching "in the realworld, and he suggested maybe double it if kept in a fridge...

"Guessing a dose" I would suggest, is not much different from guesstimating the weight of a ewe of cow!!! ;-)

You can buy 50 ml bottles. There is an animal aspirin product in a powder, Solacyl, don’t know if it’s licenced for sheep, mainly for use in calves mixed into the milk

Resistance to antibiotics is real and a major consideration. I have never heard of resistance to painkillers though and cannot see how this could occur.
Addiction maybe..

I can see that old scraggy ewe wandering in from the field, looking for her daily fix of heroin, or more likely a dopey old pothead Highland cow....Man!
