Metal fabricators, give me a ballpark cost.

I’m going to be looking for a 4t tipping trailer next year and was offered a chassis with cylinder. What would a ballpark figure be to build a flatbed with head and tailboard to go on this? Size would be 6’ x 8’ with 3’ headboard and tail.
Sorry, no idea about metal fabrication so need to turn to the experts on this forum.

We priced steel to do one similar but 12foot long before steel prices went nuts and the channel, box sections, sheet steel and hindges etc went passed £1500 then so we forgot the idea!! Wouldn’t like to think how much it would be now

yeah I’m afraid of that as well hence my call for info. Might still go for the chassis if its cheap enough and look at it as a long term project.

Have a look at Chris bull farm services, will make you a body to weld on to the chassis

I would think there are a lot of trailer manufacturers about who would make a body for you. AW in Hereford certainly offer this service, although I have never used it.

I had a couple of weekes trailers with scrap bodies but solid chassis with working rams and decided to get new bodies made rather than scrap them. I think the 2 cost me somewhere in the region of £3500. Not cheap but I don't think I could get 2 solid trailers for that, so was happy. Price would be more now, this was a couple of years ago now (maybe 17/18), steel price must be way higher.

The guy who did the work was this guy:

The work quality was fine, I just found his customer service shall we say , a bit lacking. I had spec'd things a certain way, they turned up different because quote 'He'd gone on holiday and the staff made it the way they usually would'. Plus several parts I sent as patterns never came back. A request for a small reduction in the price in return for my lost parts and it not being as ordered was met with a blank refusal. So I paid him, but won't do business with him again.

If anyone knows of a decent fabricator who would be able to make a body to fit a Salop trailer, and who can actually do what's asked, please let me know, as my livery's muck trailer body isn't long for this world......

If the guy who made your trailer bodies went on holiday and left his staff in charge is not the best price wise... you need someone who would be happy doing it over festive period at your place then you would be guaranteed having trailer to your spec.. I am not pushing for the job as I am a bit far away in Mid Wales

Steel seems to be prohibitively expensive at the moment, to the point that I've started putting off non urgent repairs and builds until "later", hoping that prices will cool off a little bit.

I've just paid $244 (NZD) for 1m2 of 5mm mild steel sheet metal - about 2.5x the price I paid in 2019.

If you really need a trailer now, best to buy a new one since there's still some available at the "old price", as you said put your chassis on the back burner for now and come back to it later.

Doing the old big k trailer up i bought out of a sale , needs ,new side rails ,and floor is 3 mm smooth sheet ,and has a few bad bits in it looks worse than it it is ,
cut side rails off last night , 🤯🤯 ,was going to replace floor , but will patch it up
steel for side rails / cross member and back cross member of a heavier piece of box was more than trailer cost , £312 and 5 sheets 2500x1250 x2 mm cr4 was 410£ so left floor sheets , .
have had new hydraulic hose for brakes ,4 new rims and used tyres ,new lights and wiring ,and steel for sides ,soon adds up ,but how much would a tidy handy 20 ft flat trailer be new today ,

I don't want to contribute to the just buy it way of life as I enjoy building myself, this would have been nice to learn a bit about steel fabrication and potentially welding. But with prices of materials compared to buying ready made it doesn't make much sense.

I've never had any dealings with these lads but chap that rents tattie ground (Top 2% type farmers) of me got a trailer refurbished, saw it here and it looked immaculate.

Really like the before and after pictures 👍

Suppose the distance might not help ??

But I thought you were going to have it done by someone else? If you want to do it yourself, rip into it and just do it, nevermind what a bunch of people on the internet say.

You'll save a lot of $$$ by getting the majority of your steel and timber from scrap metal dealers and demolition specialists. There's a lot of junk out there, but there's often good stuff hidden among the rubbish if you're prepared to spend a bit of time looking.....it's amazing what people throw out.

Apart from the hinges and the main structural RSJ/RHS bits of the deck, which would ideally need to be new or at least be in excellent condition, the rest can be cobbled together out of anything.

It all really depends on how soon you need a trailer.
