I don't think the 1200 was underpowered for it's time, it was a great ploughing tractor well balanced with good traction. I had a Ransome 4 furrow reversible and it was a treat on that. Had to be careful turning on slopes! The gearbox was a weakness and the transfer box prone to leak oil, or all of ours did anyway. The 1250 was a better upgrade it is true but a shaft failed in the gearbox on that too. Very hard to get the bits for that. Comfortable armchair type seat a big improvement on old MF165 type etc and they do sound very good on full chat.
I think the damage to back ends pulling lower link arms off was due to turning tight with implements still in the ground perhaps, rather than straight pulls? We certainly never broke one and had 3 1200's and a 1250.

Never heard of 3/699 pulling the arms off, same backend and same engine

Looks good, is the leyland box more reliable than the original or just what was around to replace at the time
I think it was what fell to hand when it s original box died. I bought it with the box in but was rather rough and ready so did a lot of modifications to make a better job especially the bell housing as the original conversion was too weak and it kept cracking. The housing is a leyland one and is grey cast so not a lot of strength.

@multipower i think the early ones were 165 back ends and the 1250 was a 595 may be wrong but it was a while ago.

But were the back ends not all the same on every banner lane mf?

If i remember on the early ones the pins were just bolted through the casing and was designed for 65 hp. The 595 was different and much beefier.
All the gear box casting are the same, but yes the axle trumpet housing did change over the years. Pretty sure my 1200 has same axle as 690
The early dry brake 1200 would have been different perhaps

690 trumpets changed during production. early ones had the heavy duty ones with two mounting holes for the link arms and heavy duty reductions, later ones had standard duty ones with one mounting hole and standard reductions. standard trumpet tractors were 4" narrower hub to hub than heavy duty ones

they were also a different ratio

Pretty sure dad's 690 has the heavy duty trumpets, so they would be the same as the 398 and 1200 ?
The 690 is much faster than 398
It didn't make much difference to the speed as the input speed was different, but if you put HD reducts on a tractor with LD ones it won't go very fast, do it the other way round though............but I am not sure it will all fit though

Out old 1505 has been quietly resting for a few years since it lunched it's gearbox. They were well known for this and it's original owner converted it to run with a pneumocyclic box from a Leyland Leopard ffs.. the boxes are fine except they have the curse of all British goods of that era in hating having any oil in them the old box spewed it out whilst discing and the rest (and the box) is history.
I got a replacement unit of eBay for£250 which may be OK and fitted it five years ago but never finished the job. However after the wet year we need to go moling so she is coming out of hibernation. Found

most of the bits and everything seems free and unseized. Dressing the engine and hope she will be running next week.

The rarity of this model today! Would see many wishing an opportunity to turn this tractors fortunes around! Good luck with it!

Another weakness with the 1200 was Bob!? No not Bob the Builder! But Bob the workshop handyman? You know! I'll cobble together another couple of mouldboards on that plough!
Another 4 legs on that cultivator!?
You know this story well, it's never big enough strong enough fast enough!?
Bob has the ideas that the manufacturer never thought off, everyone knows Bob, clever bloke Bob,
Every farm should have one!?
Sh#t the backend is hanging off!?
Yes nice one Bob!!
