Mf 290 front axle troubles

Hi, posting on behalf of my old man
C reg 290 4x4 has front axle troubles. The left hand side had a clonking noise when turning left. He's taken the left wheel off and the hub will turn freely forwards without moving the propshaft(other wheel still on the ground) but turning it backwards it will turn the propshaft. Has something seriously wrong broken inside or is it some quirk of this front axle. Hope this makes sense. Thank you

If its the same as the 265 with the shaft along the side ?I think that the auto lock front axle should allow the inner wheel to be over run when wheel is turned.
Turn the lock the other way and other wheel should do the same
Have you checked the c.v joints in the knuckle ? Chunking maybe from there
