but... (n) why all the weights, especially on the front, on a flat field?
And no duals, and only 80-odd hp...

(By the way, according to this book, there's half a tonne on the tractor drawbar)

The wheels weights on the back I can understand especially if there is only half a ton weight on the drawbar. The front weights Imo are totally pointless though. And yes duals would probably eliminate the need for rear wheel weights.

30's didn't need a lot of power.
At one time father was towing our 3m with a 47hp MF 350 4wd tractor that had no more useable power than a 135!
The three-pot did sound nice burbling up the field at 2000 RPM in 5th gear out of 8!

I do remember pulling ours with a 70,90 4wd fiat power was never an issue but pulling up a 1 in 4 bank grip certainly was.

When that pic was taken, duals were very rare in scotland, i am guessing about 1977.
The front weights would have helped with weight transfer. those of us reared on 2wd had to consider such things.

Were these never designed to be used with pressure control then?
They were but to control the coulters not for weight transfer
We used to have a 23 row disc drill on a Ford 6600
The old boy used his own form of pressure control
A chain between the arms and under the drawbar , probably not recommended but I doubt he'd have got up some of our hills without it

I think if DB John hitched a fully loaded 6 metre fergie drill up to his 1494 he might be in for a surprise. Followed by a swift unhitching session and a hunt round the yard for something bigger.

Well if it can pull a set of 6m rolls what weigh more than what a loaded drill will, which also dont put much weight on the drawbar.....why shouldnt it pull the drill

you have a serious case of underestimation i think

I've seen our Ford 7610 on 16.9/38 rears spin out with our 3 metre and a neighbours Massey 699 beaten by there 4 metre on not particularly steep going. 85hp 2wd on duals would struggle with 4 metre here never mind about 6 metre.

these hill tales seem to get "longer" by the day.....is it really that bad up there, or do you just use them as an excuse that fords dont grip very well?

3M 30 with reekies and wheel eradicators behind a 990....3/4 tonne of seed in the hopper....

didnt seem to bother it, was better behind the 14 with dual wheels though

30s dont take much pulling, those who think they do should get a better tractor maybe

MF550 2wd has done a few acres here with a 3m 30, fine on flat ground
