mf 35 --23c engine new timing chain

a friend stripped his mf 35 23c engine and never marked anything I have now started rebuild new piston /liners /shells/head redone now comes the problem he took chain off and did not mark anything----as I did not take I apart know most engines
how do I retime engine no mark on cam shaft how do you set this once get chain right I will be ok again thanks martin
 
Can't help regarding timing but for it run properly you should consider fitting new chain
Also it comes up here fairly often is modifications to make it start better

To do it properly you need the engine out, as the flywheel has an arrow on it and a scribe line to get it on top dead centre on no1 cylinder, then with a dial gauge on the rockers on no4 cylinder get them on the rock, fasten adjuster on slipper back with a cable tie, keep chain tight on driving side, and offer it to cam, there is 1 round hole, and the rest are slotted, keep moving the sprocket around till round hole lines up with a thread, then fit all the bolts back in,
Any other was than above will just not do at all
