Mf 35 4 Cylinder oil ???

Hi

We have a MF35 4 Cylinder Diesel and we need to do an oil change. What oil can I put in this and what are the recommended oil change times.

Any help would be appreciated

20w50 would be my choice

I’ve heard people using 15w-40. Is there any harm if I put a 15w-50 or 20w-50 in? How often should the oil be changed?

20w50 will be thicker at cold and hot temperatures than a 15w40. Older engines were built to less tolerance than newer ones, and given the engine is a 1950’s origin and will most likely have additional wear, 20w50 would be a good oil in my opinion to maintain good oil pressure

Modern oils have a lot of cleaners in them, that are not good for older engines like your 4cyl.
Modern 15w40 or 20w50 are better than leaving the old oil in it, but are likely to cause the engine to be bit smokey and it will probably burn a bit more than it should.
The low detergent golden film Morris oil is what should be in it.

How many hours does it do a year. If it isn't many maybe change it on a time basis rather than worked hours

Thanks for all your reply’s. The tractor does very light work. It’s used to Harrow an arena once a week for about 30-40 mins other than that it may be used to top a small field again about 2hours work twice a year.

Think I would change it annually then. I would change the fuel filter at the same time too.

I doubt if many 35's had an oil change every 120 weeks, let alone 120 hours!

Or the air filter cleaned every week as the operator manual said!

I change the oil and filter in my 35 most years.
After 57 years (both of us) I don't think I need to alter the service interval. I can't claim it does a lot of hard work these days but happily go ploughing with it if need be.

Thank you everyone for your answers and advice. I have purchased some golden film oil from Morris and will let you know how I get on. If not I may have to look into a engine rebuild. I’ve done these before but was hoping to avoid it on this one.

how does tractor start from cold ? as everyone knows the 4 cylinder is notorious bad starter
Do you run it on white or red?

Make sure its no detergent these engines prefere the carbon in the oil to help seal

the tractor starts from cold no problem as it has a glow plug conversion done on the head. It literally starts off the button. We currently run it on red diesel. We’ve got good oil pressure too. The gauge says about 40 at idle and 60 at full revs.

Well just an update. I’ve finally got round to changing the oil and filters this morning. The tractor has good oil pressure but still has a little smoke. How smoky are these engines supposed to be. I know there 60 years old but still just wondering if it might be worth getting the engine rebuilt or if it’s me being too picky. It does seem happier on the new oil though but it might need to do some work to work it through.

Also another question my dipstick has 3 lines on it. I’m assuming this is min, half and max? Anyone else seen this.

Take it for a good run out on the road plenty of hills and don't hold back.
Might help blow the cobwebs out and reduce the smoke
Engine rebuild won't help much if the engine never gets put under working pressure it will just glaze up

From my experience they are a tiny bit smokey anyhow, especially when engine is cold, I wouldn’t worry about it unless it was excessively bad and using oil.

If the oil pressure is good when hot and it starts reasonably well than I would leave it as it is. The standard 4 pot is not quite as easy to refurbish as the perkins 3 pots. Take it got a good run as @Bald n Grumpy suggests, that may just do the trick
