MF 6470 engine bother.

Does anyone ever have the valve clearances checked nowadays ? Most manufacturers recommend it. Always something that was checked back in the day.

Yes at the first service and then around 1200 hours, after which they tend to settle down. I had them checked on my NH about 18 months ago because I thought it sounded slightly tappety at 8000 hours or so, but all clearances were fine.

I didn’t think that would be done at a first service :scratchhead:
Depends on the engine type. Sisu two valve Fortius engines, no. Four valve Citius engines, yes. New Holland series 60 and early Powerstar engines, yes. Later ones in black chassis tractors, no.
It depends on the design, the manufacturer's recommended interval and possibly most importantly, the experience of the skilled mechanic with that particular model of engine, including the sound of individual engines.

I meant in new tractor first service.

Our local Claas fitter has an obsession with checking valves
Can guarantee that anything that goes into Rickerby`s Bowburn will have the valves set before it comes out
The issue with some types of four valve engines, not particularly tractor engines though, is that valve clearance tends to decrease as they age, not increase. This has no relevance to most tractor engines to my knowledge, but it is something to be aware of.
Most are adjusted with a screw and lock nut but the early Powerstar NH/Case engines have tapered thread adjusters, which are actually dead simple and surprisingly [to me initially] very reliable and dependable.

Thanks for all replies,
I have no direct experience with Sisu engines but always believed them to be fairly tough strong pulling motors.
My neighbour has had no other bother in a fleet of MF between him and his BiL.
The one which recently failed has always been noisy in the timing case area, but has got to 4100hrs till this happened.
These owners are not kicking off about it, or looking for sympathy/help from MF, more just wondering if there is an underlying weakness, hence the question. It appears not from the replies!!!
Sh!t happens I guess!
