MF148 PTO operation

Hi

I have an MF148 with multi power that was my grandads and I’m unsure of the PTO setup it has as It doesn’t make sense from the research I’ve been doing.
The PTO only has two positions (on and off) and says on the sticker above it ‘Independent’ but it also has a dual clutch. If I push the clutch down through the second stage it stops the PTO and hydraulics. From my manual it should either be a live pto model with ground speed and two stage clutch or independent with a single clutch? Any explanation would be great?
Thanks

I drove a 188 in the 70’s. It had IPTO hydraulically engaged/disengaged, BUT also a 2 stage clutch. If you have a look on the pedal you will see a rod with a clevis. There are 2 mounting holes and one of the holes reduces the height of the pedal and only disengages the transmission clutch. That is fine as you have IPTO.

You have independent pto so you can just engage it with the lever. You also have a dual clutch but you don't need it so only push it down to the first stage or move the stop mounted on the ront of the foot plate to prevent the pedal moving to the second stage. I don't think the single/spilt torque clutch came in till the 500 series. You won't have ground speed. If you do push the clutch fully down you will loose M/P pto and hydraulics.

Every day is a learning day. I drove quite a few MF years ago and they mostly had IPTOs. I did not realise there was still a 2 stage clutch. Presumably that was dropped on the 500 series? I did drive one borrowed 590 and went to use the PTO and was shocked to find it grated as I engaged it.

Might have been dropped in the late 100 but definitely a single clutch in a ipto 500 series. Still a obviously a dual clutch in a non ipto/ ground speed 500 series.

Interesting - years ago my 188 was a complete PITA as it would regularly [4 times in 3 years from new] lose pto, hydraulics and MP, which I'd always thought was an internal hydraulics problem. You have made me think now that it may have been a 2 stage clutch problem [although as described in my post above, the clutch was always set up in a transmission only setting - It dropped the pedal down making it much easier for a long legged person to use]. I never got dealer feedback as I was only the humble driver, but it was always mended under warranty, so perhaps they never told the boss what the problem was.
It was passed down to junior colleague after a year when it refused to drive the NH 33 double chop fast enough to blow the grass up the pipe - The old man went off in a fit of pique and ordered me a 7000 there and than, but I had to wait 8 months for delivery due to the 3 day week, but the bonus was that it then came as one of the first DP models - Fantastic tractor!

A 188 was one of the first tractors I used as a student. It had been the farms 2nd main tractor when new and had done a ton of work. I don't think it ever had a spanner used on it. It was nice to climb on a 590 and a Q cab despite the crap steering and slow road speed on an early one.
