As good as 12 speed syncro?

It changes as nicely as one of the better 6 speed car gearboxes. When they eventually add a power-splitter to it, it will be perfect, or as perfect as a manual transmission could ever be. Probably.
Floor mounted gear lever could do with being four inches longer perhaps. I was quite amazed by how good the shift on these new models is. No obstruction. No rubberiness, No notchiness. Nice short throw. Positive gates with nice predictable lever return to centre. Light to use. Only two ranges. What's not to like?

Hope they have mastered the art of making a nice smooth long-lasting manual clutch to go with it. They failed dismally on that score with the manual shuttle 5400 series which would have been OK otherwise. Not in the same league as these new models though.

These new 4700 and 5700 are almost certain to become future classics even though, or probably as a consequence of having nice manual gearboxes in an age where semi-powershifts predominate in Europe.

Nearly as good as the 8 speed crash box in the 565 and 590s then .

They were good boxes in their time and better than the heavier sliding spur gears in the 100 series. However, I reckon Ford had the best constant-mesh gearboxes, being very tough and good to use even allowing for the overlap between ranges. When optioned with the Dual Power, from around 1975 on, they were brilliant.
John Deere had a fair constant mesh box in the 30 series too.

Was that a 6 354.4 rather than 6 354? My jcb 805b 6 354.4 was a bitch to start, it was well worn mind you, I replaced it with a older 6 354 from a combine, just like the 1200 it starts very easy
We used to say about our MF 1100 ( 6/354 engine) "Stroke the key and it will start" It was still a brilliant starter the day we sold it and it was 27 years old!. The only things we needed to do to that engine in all that time was a new rocker cover gasket and the timing case cracked around the dynamo bracket so it had to be repaired.
