MF4255 Drive issue.

4255 12*12 with splitter.

Just restacking a muck heap and now wont go into gear when running. Gear goes in nice and smooth when not running. Only been working for 10 mins.

Had exact same problem 12 months ago and ended up with new clutch - only done 100 hours since then and not heavy work.

Is there a known problem with these....?

Anyone know a MF specialist in leics/ derby/ notts area?

F & R shuttle lever on column on left. Gear stick from floor.

Sound like clutch issue, but could be cable from the pedal rather than the clutch itself.

Ummm.... if it is a red forward/reverse lever then that would indicated a power shuttle. But it should go into forward/reverse no problem, your original post suggested you couldn’t do that. Also if the clutch was done 100hrs ago that would have been an expensive job, rather than a dry clutch which would have been sub£1000.

Will change range no problem but not go into gear - its like the gear stick is pushing against something - when engines off it will select gear fine. Its a 2001 on a Y plate.

Cuts 15 acre with a flail mower 4 times a year, sprays with a small 3 point link sprayer 10 times a year, 2 days compost spreading and pulls 3 ton of horse muck every 6 weeks. I don't feel I'm giving it a hard life!!

You're right last clutch cost a packet - if its gone again I'm going to write to cadburys because the chuffing thing must be made of chocolate.

Is there a bowden cable conected to clutch pedal that moves an interlock to let it into gear? Otherwise coukd the linkage underneath be wedged with a stone or similar?

I'm not sure im reading it right.. Do you have a red/orange shuttle lever on your left hand? You change direction without using the clutch pedal?

Correct, red/ orange lever on left.

Have always come pretty much to a halt and used clutch when changing direction.

The adjuster on the lever for the clutch on the side of the bell housing has probably slipped as the pinch bolt for adjuster was not tight enough

If so, it's a power shuttle transmission. There is a neutral switch that wears away inside of the above unit that can cause the transmission to drag and make changes difficult, Saying that it should still change easily when you press the clutch.

So if it’s a red lever it’s a power shuttle and all electronic, the wet clutches are back to back on a central hub in an extension to the gearbox where the normal clutch could have been.

they were very sensitive to coolant and therefore warping the plates as they were squeezed in a very small area and so it was always recommended to not use the clutch pedal much and use the shuttle. There were a number of programs done including a big filter being bolted to one of the trumpet housings.

i cannot remember for sure but I think of you did a lot of stationary work it was recommended to put in forward and the main stick in neutral so the front clutches were in and the coolant flowing.

unfortunately one of those not going into gear when the shuttle is in neutral could be a sign of the plates being warped in either clutch pack.
