MF6290 - temp gauge showing high

Wondered if I could “Ask the Audience” on this one please?

Temperature gauge on my 6290 goes to pretty high (red zone but not red light) as soon as I turn the ignition on. When turned off it then goes back down again. Happens even when started from cold.

Clearly not an actual temperature problem so possibly the gauge or the sensor....or wiring between the two?

Anyone come across this before?

Sounds like the temp sender , take the wire off it and see what it dose , earth wire out and see what it dose you will find out then

Fuel gauge still sensible, as they usually use the same stabilized voltage supply?

Most likely the sensor wire going to earth on the engine / chassis because the insulation got caught.
But the above test will eliminate the sensor and point towards the wire.

Had the very same happen today on a 6260 water in radiator cool engine block was able to be touched and no major burns viscous fan working as it should, have ordered a temperature sender as it has worked all day with a erratic gauge reading mainly near the red zone.

I’m glad you asked that. The other day when looking at the gauge on the road I noticed it was rocking around quite a bit, by approx a quarter of a tank but field can slosh around and never paid much attention to if it moved in the road before. Will now go and check how it looks when sat stationary and if it still wobbles.

I thought it was normal for the fuel gauge to move about on the 62 series? Mine certainly does. On half a tank it reads empty going down hill and full going up. Temp gauge works fine though.

I think that's pretty normal on most tractors - the fuel sensor is either in the front, back, left or right of the tank. Going downhill/uphill or across a slope can cause the fuel gauge to read exactly as you say.

Thanks for the advice.

Took wire off. No change.

Earthed wire. Temp gauge doesn’t change, but temp warning light comes on on the dash.

Do i take it this means new gauge required?

I'll have to go and look at my 6270 but are you sure you got the right wire? Would guess there is a sensor for the light and one for the gauge. I'll go and have a look in a minute............

Right, just had a look and my 70 has no light on the gauge. The gauge sender is on top of the head, front left hand corner below the air con compressor. Below it at the back of the water pump and just above the injector pump is another sender with two wires. I assume,on mine anyway, that this will make the big red triangle show on the dash if there is overheating, instead of a small light on the gauge. Which wire did you have off to earth?

Yes,that's for the engine oil pressure light.
Not sure if you can see or get at the temp gauge sender easily as it's sort of below and behind the air con comp on the head. I have the compressor off mine at the minute and the sender is easily accessed!
