Microsoft office issue

Hi all.
I have a problem with the Microsoft Word document. I can not open .rtf format file cause of the following message: Error detected in the file. Can anyone advise me how repair rtf document?
I have created the file on Windows 8. Now I am using Windows 10.

Any help would be appreciated.

Wordpad reads .rtf documents.
Is Wordpad on Windows 10?, I'm still using 7.

Can you open it via Notepad?
Right click- Open with and select Notepad (make sure that Always... is unticked)
If it works, you have a lot of gobbledegook, but amongst it all, you will find your text. If the document is small, it may not be too much work to edit, but if there is a lot text, then it will be

It sounds like the file is damaged so you'll probably have to go back to a backup...

Well I have tried Wordpad and Notepad. The file does not want to open. The file is really damaged
