Are there many doing this? I usually lamb start of April on rested fields, no real growth here until middle of may, This year it didn't come until mid June, , was hoping to get away with out resting the lambing fields and graze them all winter, any thoughts??

I lambed end of Apr to end of May. It's ok but too long. This year I intend on a 17 day tupping period, probably aiming to start lambing 01 May.

My May born hoggs are doing a good job of rearing their May born lambs and maintaining body condition on poor forage. I guess no one told them 🤷🏻‍♂️

People that lambed in april are grading lambs now though at £140.
As i said you are in danger of missing the boat.

Shetland based maternals on zero input downland would not achieve sufficient growth to draw now even if lambed in Jan.

I'm a store lamb producer. The increase in lamb survival is worth the trade off. As I fix my ewe type and improve my grassland management you may well be correct.

I can always lamb earlier if needed.

Medium input system Lambing date should coincide when you get a flush of grass if your racing to get them finished , ideally I’d want my lambs 6-8 weeks old at peak grass production so roughly 20th March, once the grass has shot /gone to stem our lambs need moving to better stuff or performance drops

Low input system should lamb when lamb mortality/lambing workload will be lowest IMO mid April onwards up here
