Milk collection Galway

One thing is for sure I wouldn't rent out my 40 acres never, farming is in my blood I'm obsessed with it, my thinking is why have a beef system or sucklers, and loose money coz it's impossible to make money off them, and instead milk let's say 40 cows (same work in all 3 systems mentioned above if you ask me) meet all my payments and then what's left is mine
Same work in 40 sucklers as 40 milkers? What you doing to your sucklers of a Sunday evening

I reckon that 40 acres could handle 70 cows and a robot as long as theres access to extra rented silage ground nearby and then you could really make a go of it and have flexibility to spend time with your kids because you're not tied to milking
Big money up front though and as soon as you end up taking away land on the costs and work load go up.
70 cows could be easy or hard work (see all TFF threads for this) so if the OP really wants to milk maybe selling one block to get into a more suitable one would be easier?
If the OP has no experience dairying it might pay to go and work somewhere for a bit and learn the business.

Having listened to all that ye have said I think commercial dairying is a bit out of my reach due to size someone did suggest to set up an organic dairy farm as land would be ideal and price is good for this milk and smaller competition only 70 organic dairy farms in Ireland, and I rand the little milk company and they would take my milk after conversion is complete, any opinions would be welcome

Organic aswell to learn a lot of changes at once. High milk price higher costs it’s all relevant would be my take.

Yes that's true but at least with the 24 month conversion period I have time to learn and get what's needed in place and be set up and ready to

Have you thought about doing some relief milking locally to get a bit more clued in on the dairy side? Try and get an idea of a few different systems.

Hardly now, if I asked you how many litres a conventional cow produces they isn’t really a right answer as it could be anywhere from 20 to 70 depending on system
Exactly. Being organic or not won't have the bearing on how much milk the cow produces more the system the cow goes into. I think BA38 possibly needs a better understanding of milk production before spending a ball of money and committing to a future in it.

Not sure if you've said before but have you milked cows before? If not, you'd be better to get some experience relief milking for someone locally to see if it's for you. If you work from 9.30 to 4.30 you could fit it in easily around your other work. Earn money while you gain experience and down the line the farmer may even let you keep a few of your own cows there while you get your own farm setup.

Some will pick up every other day, ours does for our smaller herd. It of course depends how close to other farms you are if they are passing your gate on their round.
