Just had a friend on the phone asking for FM number
Seems the dairy he supplies have been on a A / B pricing. , with B being based on spot price.
Now that spot is heading for 30 they have decided to do away with A /B.
Farmers could put up with a B price of 16p at times if 6 months later the B price was 32p, when it was a reasonable reflection of the current market.

No wonder producers have a jaundiced view of processors.

Did that same producer leave his previous buyer because they would be .5p better off though?

Did you tell your friend that's exactly what FM did when they had an A/B pricing system?

Mysteriously Freshways have now done away with the 60/40 split of their A price of 24p for July (60% of milk paid on the A price, 40% paid on spot price). Suited them quite well when the spot price was 10p for April and 11p for May. Their headline price of 24p was only achievable if you supplied 60% of your ‘allowed‘ volume. If you only filled your allowed volume their headline price was nearer 18-18.5ppl for those 2 months.

Not sure all the markets for their milk returned immediately on July 1st though (were all the Costas/Wetherspoons open then??) or was the spot price just exceeding the A price and they didn’t want the farmer to get the extra from the spot market?? Not that I’m cynical or anything!!

Dairy contract reform consultation anyone??

I expect a lot of the milk that Freshways has lost in the last few weeks as farmers left is being sold back to them by the new buyers at spot prices!!
