Big backlog in getting first cuts in up here, been waiting 10 days and I’m still second on the list.
On my hill it's not actually the front sheet that's the problem. It's the wind blowing over a slope in the sheet and an aeroplane effect causing the sheet to be sucked up. The nets disturb the airflow a bit. It's frightening to see what weight of tyres the wind can lift.

Although making good/lucky decisions does pay off. The biggest factor is making quality forage which will go along way of holding onto some of that high milk price
quality fodder is really the easiest way, to reduce conc use, it costs no more to make silage at the ideal grass stage, than to let it bulk up, where grass has sent up its seed heads, which will reduce quality. Economics of multi cut have changed though.

We are moving away from 6 cuts to 4 due to problems with butyric fermentation if you get too keen especially as the weather patterns appear to be altering in to longer periods of dry making the grass head quicker.
Even leaf sampling can fool you btw

We are no better off when cake is at 420 fert at 750
Lol. If I’d been given a guide price of 47p ish a few years ago and fert and feed where they are now I might’ve still been milking. Fert and feed needed to be free when I was being quoted 11p for milk back then. Moan all you like, it’s up to you how much you spend on inputs. If you can’t make money at 47p then you’ve got some serious problems. Real serious problems.

Anyway, glad you appreciated my post.

The CEO of our processor loves putting up graphs at the annual producer meetings to demonstrate why they pay the price they pay. He insists that milk tracks oil

Trouble is, it not just feed and fert that have increased. Red at around a pound a litre, electric rising, shortage of labour, more regs. All costs are increasing.

Many around here who have got their silage are finding it hard to keep it in the pit as it’s running out to meet them or finding it’s own way out through pit walls or what’s left of them once they have collapsed.

Labour is going to be the Governing factor of alot of things on farm, even more so in the next twelve months. Both cost and avaliability.
Labour cost is probably the one cost that hasn't increased significantly yet, which is probably the reason there is a shortage. We just muddle on here and do what we can do, but I know of several others around here that are struggling to find staff.
