Milking cow/ young stock prices.

Youngstock took a tumble last season with fears of a long winter. That was with decent forage and bedding stocks. Last spring cleared all that out and we all know the fears heading into this winter.

Someone I know took a load of strong bulling heifers to market and barely made their rearing costs. Could be some bargains.

Few times over the last few years I’ve looked at selling some surplus youngstock and I’d say they hardly ever make what it costs too rear them.

I’ve just sold a few incalf cows. Seem much better money than selling youngstock.

we have been quietly buying a few y/s, I/c hfrs 500-750, stirks can be all over the range, 100 - 350. will serve most to beef this autumn
Yet AHDB , a government quango funded by us, keep telling us it costs 2k to rear a heifer. Yet tb compensation is a pittance for in calf heifers. Try rearing them that , £640 iirc. Left hand don't know what the right hand is doing!

as the drought continues, some farmers will have to sell y/s to save forage for the milkers, out of pattern cows holsworthy, I/c but not warranted, or just running with the bull, very cheap £500, yet same sort of cows, but warranted I/c
sold very well up to £900's.in Exeter. but for a lot of farmers its another kick in the rubbish after a bad year, and I bet increases in milk prices will only cover cake prices. we are going to put most of autumn block to beef. we see any amount of decent young cows I/c so no calving or 3/4 problems, and they certainly don't cost £2000 !

And watch the tb valuations plummet to boot

5+ calvers average 552, but topped at £1701
Also the 1st calve heifers average..... if any one wants to expand or get into milk
