no such yields here, hence probably why it got that spec. Majority of it has been towards the lower end of that spectrum, but a little positive to slightly offset the yield disappointmentwarksfarmer

Nelson 79 bushel, 335 hag, 15.9 protein, 0.6 screening.
Crusoe 74 bushel, 300 hag, 12.8 protein, 1 screening.
Yield not great though at 2-2.5t/acre on light sandy soil. Luckily we’ve not spent much on them. 220kg N. 3 x fungs. The Nelson is the best looking harvested seed I’ve ever seen but disappointed in the yield which we expected 3t/ac (farm average 3.5t/acre of group 1). Not sure whether to farm save and plant it again at the moment.

How low can the protein levels go and still be suitable for milling wheat if there is a shortage ?
I'm sure organic milling wheat is acceptaple at 10.9% protein..........so why not properly grown wheat !!

Depending on the mill, 11.1% to 11.3% can get in with a claim as Low Grade Milling, anything less will be out.

What sort of premium do you get on Nelson? I assume it would be better than normal grp 1?

Guess the same as a normal Group 1, they get funny if the protein is 16% and you'll get deductions.............!!

Evening Chunky, Heygates pay a good premium OVER the Group 1 price for Nelson. As a German E quality wheat it produces excellent quality and consistently produces higher proteins, hagbergs and spec weights than our standard U.K. Group 1 types. It does however, unlike a lot of other varieties, produce excellent loaves at low protein levels. We have seen loaves baked with 11.0% organic Nelson produce a higher loaf volume and better crumb structure than 19% imported Kazak wheat. This trait makes Nelson a very safe variety for the miller.
There will in our opinion be an increased requirement for E Quality wheat by U.K. millers due to its gluten quality and with the uncertainty of Brexit and potential import levies it makes sense to look at the U.K. growing more of these E Quality varieties.

No as always we treat milling wheat as feed which maximises the return.

My proteins for both Mulika and Spring sown (April) Skyfall were 15-15.5% Bushels 79-82 and hags from 390 right down to 200 for the Skyfall, which turned out to be some of the best wheat I cut this year. I am certainly going to grow a few fields of Spring sown Skyfall next Spring.
