How much ergot - the other physical factors we can understand against parameters. 'With ergot' is quite nebulous. and requires more explanation for anyone to know if that sample is still a Group 1 full milling spec, or a feed wheat, or a salvage worthwhile job. Sorry to be so picky. Cheers.

Not picky at all.

I agree that ergot is often described without being quantified in terms of established parameters.

Ergot contamination manages to be both objective (it's either present or absent) and subjective ("still a Group 1 full milling spec, or a feed wheat, or a salvage worthwhile job")

This particular load of wheat had 12 pieces of large cereal ergot in a 5kg sample.

In the days before we had a colour sorter, intake loads with ergot would be automatically downgraded to feed, on the basis that mills & maltings would reject if they found a single piece of ergot.

Depends on the mill. Depends on the day you send it in to the mill.

You can tell your friend that the official trade tolerance for ergot in feed wheat/barley is 0.001% by weight, which equates to 290g of ergot in an artic load.

To give it some context, you can send your friend this photo, which shows 1.00g of ergot.

However, all end users are within their rights to reject based on "visual appearance"...
