Ransom thought of the day does the moisture content of wheat affect the protein level I.e. would 14% moisture wheat still be 13 protein if it was 13 or 15% moisture
Only ask as looking at sample results
14.80 mc is 13.8 protein
15.50 mc is 13.3 protein

Great question!

If you dry a 14t trailer of grain, when it comes out the dryer it weighs less and is less volume. In theory only water has left….no nitrogen, so would the protein content be greater.

@Clive would probably know….and if not he could test the theory with his snazzy analyser machine.

yes % protein increases as you dry - not because more protein is made but because what you have is less diluted

Is milling protein not measured on a DM basis? Every other feedstuff is, to enable fair comparisons to be made.

Therefore it shouldn't change, unless something goes on with the foliar urea deception.

They could calculate the Protein when its dry, but then will you dry it?
All milling wheat should be tested after drying and a couple of months storage.. the hagberg tends to rise.

Does this imply that a spec of 13% protein is based on 15% moisture, which by my sums is 15.3% CP on a DM basis? It's not how any other protein is quoted. As an extreme example, a load of draff could be declared as 28% protein, but still be 75% water.

It should be 13% at 15%, but if it was 25% off the combine the test result would be around 12%...ish, unless some new test equipment can adjust for it... but not in my experience.

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) alongside the Farm Safety Partnership (FSP), has named new farm safety champions and commended the outstanding work on farm safety that has been carried out in the farming community in the last 20 years.

Two of these champions are Malcom Downey, retired principal inspector for the Agri/Food team in HSENI and Harry Sinclair, current chair of the Farm Safety Partnership and former president of the Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU).
