got my eye on a large number of 5/6ft tall ash trees, naturally self seeded on solid surface, that's has accumulated soil over the years, bucket on the telehandler, gentle push, hey presto, especially if I can get £8 grant.

I was under the impression that grass was as good at carbon sequestration as trees? And surely trees are slow growing and use less carbon dioxide when fully grown? Am I wrong?

I've no idea on that, but I can tell you this snippet from the Forestry Commission. Years n years ago we where told about our trees that leaves aren’t leaves they are “Factory Areas” using up whatever it is they use !.

Just abandon the land and let it regenerate naturally.
No inputs.
No need for thousands of Eastern Europeans to do the planting.
Job done.
If us Western l/s farmers lose our EU market, that might be what we see.
In Snowdonia you can still see the farms that were abandoned in the 1890s depression on account of all the scattered thorn bushes.

Planted 30 white hornbeam 6 years ago, advised best suited to our soils, for numerous reasons now down to 12 doing well, if that is repeated across the board suggest need to plant 2.5 trees to get 1, anyone know if that is a realistic figure?

So the fact is managed grazed grassland sequesters more carbon than forests.

WhIch muppet thinks it’s a good idea!:X3:
just listened to Stephen Kinnock on any questions and he said planning rules would be altered to allow the tree planting, no mention of the fact that you don't need planning permission to plant trees or That the land is privately owned, so it's the owners choice!

Being on an AHA tenancy its a very diff one to ask if i can plant trees here & wont see a penny back after doing so not in my working career anyways
how does the payback work then? 20-25yrs & cut it all down n re plant? or am i missing something here?
or is there some sort of yearly payment to move than cover the RENT ?

Woodland planting, in Scotland at least, is subject to a formal planning process where statutory stakeholders and neighbours must be notified and given the opportunity to comment and plans available for public scrutiny and comment for, I think, 4 weeks.

If you are intending to claim grant assistance that is

Edit:- English requirement:-

20-25 years should take you to first thinning - you will have a while longer to wait for a clearfell
