Looking to put some rape/stubble turnips in on spring barley stubble. Usually plough and drill conventionally for sheep. But looking to keep the soil structure firmer and try and out winter some suckler cows.
What’s everyone doing to drill theirs?
To tight to get DD in so was thinking a one pass then fert, air drill and roll

Do around 200 acre s t and 100 ish oil radish with this
Spin Fert on stubble

Do you chop the straw?

I struggle to understand how a seed dropped on bare ground will germinate and establish roots.

It germinates fine, as long as it rains. If it then rains for a month and delays combining, you get lots of green growth in the straw. If it doesn’t rain, you’ve gained nothing over drilling it into the soil after combining.

Sometimes it will work perfectly. Do you feel lucky?

Spun some into barley in the last week in June, they are coming up well. They usually spread to about 18 metres. Will fill in the gaps direct drilling, either a KV TS EVO tine drill or Erth Disc drill.

With heavy rain forecast on & off for a few days, I spun some mustard seed on 11ac of stubble last night with the slug pelleter. True ‘no-till’ seeding.👍

I’m tempted to do the 25ac of stubble turnips the same way, but there’s a few bits that need cultivating after water logging last winter.

Is anyone spraying off their straw stubble before drilling rape or stubble turnips?
Got a bit of weed on fore-ends and shallow spots. Or do you think the green crop will out compete the weed?

Get it in, this time of year, plenty of heat and moisture. Green crop should smother out most weed.
