Minimum Days For Tupping?

Aye-up,

To ensure good conception rates, what’s the minimum days you would put tups into the ewes for?

We’ve got them in now for a few over Christmas but don’t want that to drag on too long at lambing. We will then put them back in later for a mid February lambing.

A lot depends on your breeds, put them in with Charolais/Suffolk/Dorset’s and a fair few will conceive within 14/17 days, put BFL in and none will conceive.

They are Hampshire Downs mainly with a few Lleyns.

My lleyns can be slow to cycle, they don’t tend to get going naturally until last week of September

I guess its how long you want them to lamb for...

A cycle is around 17 days, so for best results I guess two lots of 17 days just incase the first cycle gets missed.

Last year I only had the tups in for 3 weeks, all lambed in under 20 days, this year im doing two lots of lambings and both will be for two cycles with a bit of a break in the middle to avoid as little cross over as possible (even though its bound to crossover still)

Have been at places where the lambing can stretch on for far too long due to rams not being taken out until scanning or even beyond scanning

If the ewes are cycling naturally, almost everything should take in 17 days (assuming the rams aren't firing blanks of course, and are capable of physical doing their job). That's where teasers are beneficial in later cycling ewes, by getting them going.
I tease my April lambers for a month, to make sure they're all cycling. There's something wrong if I have 10 out of 500 that repeat after the first cycle (rams get raddled at 17 days. I usually leave the rams in for 2 cycles, just to cover mishaps though.
Ewe lambs never seem so keen to go in the first cycle though, and spread themselves over the 35 days.
