Mist net the solution?

Mist nets are used to catch birds for ringing purposes. The birds are not harmed if they are released promptly. Are you going to unhook them from the nets, say every hour?

There are plenty of suitable products available, Gale Breaker perhaps.

Got a problem with starlings in a machinery shed. No matter what they seem to get in. Would a mist net be the answer? How legal are they?

In an enclosed space like a machine shed, your best bet is an Agrilite laser which greatly unsettles them and is harmless. However it’s labour intensive but you should be able to shift them within a week.
If you haven’t the manpower, you can get a laser on a motor but then you’re into £1000+

Other methods only have a short working life before habituation (other than shooting if course but that needs a permit and really only satisfies you - and that only temporarily)

Alternatively you could net the gaps but no doubt be too difficult to stop up entrances

If I may ask, what's wrong with some Starlings? I know they're an invasive species in the US, but they're native here?

Have a read of this and get back to me ...

I forget who told Queen Victoria the answer to a sparrow plague in the Crystal Palace was, "Sparrowhawks, ma'am, sparrowhawks".

If you could find an experienced falconer with a sparrowhawk, that would shift them. Probably wouldn't work in a cattle shed for fear of the bird being trampled, but a machinery shed is a different matter. They don't like it up 'em!

we have just cleared shed using netting wire to block ridges of big six at eaves and doors. slow process but we got them out of grain shed 2 years ago with similar effort. shot the last one who pushed thru brush strip on roller door.
sparrowhawk came in last week to help and got several unaided, we had to leave doors open overnight
to let him/her out.

Tried getting a falconer but they weren't interested.
