mixing 15 and 20ft bays

We did one to give a 40ft opening
Beam was bigger than the stanchions it was bolted to I seem to recall
Engineer design is the way to go

Thanks, you've answered a question I hadn't had chance to ask, was only the other day wondering if it would be possible to skip a post on 20ft bays.

As been said- if you're skipping a bay and using a carrier beam then a few calcs from a structural engineer is the way to go. Try and pick one that has a leaning towards structural steelwork though! Ref skipping a column, the columns that pick up the carrier beam really ought to be portalised to be structurally correct. The carrier beam is transmitting its load into the weakest axis of the column. They can and do bend like a banana when load gets transferred into them.
