Anyone doing it? What are you mix in with your clamp silage, at what rate are you mixing it in at. And what's the best way for a even distribution across the entire clamp?

@Beef farmer no I haven't been reading it I guess there is an article about it in there. Chap near us mixes 5% rapeseed with his maize every year. Dad has done I in the pass with sugar beet feed to dry up and wet silage. But we never done it scientifically thou.

Heard of folk putting wheat feed in, but don't know anything about. I have only done Draff in the past on the bottom and mixed tatties with the grass.

I was reading a guy doing 7% rolled wheat on a Facebook group. Fills the clamp in layers and spread with an old vicon spreader. Heard of another person putting rape in maize but was struggling to avoid pockets.

What's the benefit if your not self feeding?

Tipped beet pulp on every load about 30years ago, made good stuff (y) didn't like it dropping off the grab when we filled the feeder (n) be alright now using a bucket grab, but I've no desire to do it again it would cost a bomb.

Combined some beans a bit damp a few years ago, hammer milled them then mixed with maize as it came in, planned doing it with rapemeal the next year but the contractors turned up before the rapemeal.
It does work but you only get 1 chance to do it, so do it yourself.

I know a chap over near Crediton who ensiled all there winter feed concrete in with the maize and grass silage. There was not much saving in per ton bought, in this instance. But the bigger set saving was when feeding out no changing over buckets timesaved etc, the diet was already set, so when the manager went home to NZ for a month there was not much that could go wrong.

We've been mixing rolled barley in clover grass silage for years. just have a heap in the corner of the clamp, pick up the bucket in the grab and sprinkle over the clamp every 3 loads. takes skill not to get pockets, add a bit extra if it is wet, less if dry. It needs to be spread evenly and fairly thin or you can get mould if the barley does not get fully ensiled. Mix 60 tonne in 1800 tonne for 200 cows.

Mary Quickes are doing it. Apparently works well. The farm manager reckoned they were saving about 40 mins a day changing grab to bucket, although I would've thought a shearbucket would've been easier!

They just had it dumped nearby and spread it with the bucket, I think.

Thats the farm

Just tip a bucket over each load before is bukraked away, you can get a surprisingly even distribution, its down to technique. You do need to no how heavy the trailers are and how much is in the bucket obviously.
