Mixing straw

Wanting to mix straw with silage for wintering heifers.

Just wondering how much.
Silage was very young grass so will skitter them.
Was thinking something like.
3 kg straw
16kg silage
2kg of rearer cake 18%.

Would this be sufficient for bulled dairy heifers. Ranging from 18-26 months old.

I think 3kg may be a little high. We include straw into all our store cattle mixes in winter...find hybrid barley straw very good as it's brittle and mixed well and quickly in the keenan. That would 300kg of straw with 1600kg of silage plus concentrate. We feed dry cows on a high straw ration...1 mix for 2 days for around 30 cows....180kg straw, 2000kg silage plus 100kg protein blend. That comes out quite "strawy"....The more straw you include in your mix will " weaken" the mix and have to compensate with concentrate.
