Having had another bearing go after only 4 months on our storth slurry stirrer ,getting really hacked off now. Looking for alternative machines, looked at Mixit website , seems nice simple machine. Have anybody on the forum had any experience of these machines? Or are there better machines in use.?

What bearing is going on your storth?

I have a 25' storth and had the 1st bearing up from the paddle fail, found out it was caused by the park legs being to short, when parked slurry was running into the bearing.

Been a good stirrer so far,was cheap as chips when I bought it.:)

I have a basic 20ft one. Its the main bearing at tractor PTO connection. 4 months ago we replaced rubber bearing after found slurry had gone up tube and damaged main bearing , thought that would sort it for a few years. Obviously the slurry has gone up tube again, even though we made sure it was stored correctly and used it at a reasonable downward angle (pto running straight).

What sort of power have you on it?

Storth told me they aren't suitable for 200hp +

Have you got a decent gap between the tube and the bearing, mine was blocked with shite last time I looked at it.

Next door have got a mixit & moan like hell about getting through bearings...our Storth gets through bearings but they all do from what I've seen..

I bought a 25ft Mixit stirer in May. I also looked at a Storth but it was twice the price. Very happy with the Mixit. The only thing that would help is having a hydraulic top link to make it easier to move between mixing points on my lagoon. It's 58m by 58m and I can get it all moving from 3 mixing points. The auger flights on the shaft are good at breaking any crust that hits the shaft.

=1 for the hydraulic top link

You would have thought so !! We were flat out and needed it done asap . Phoned dealer, told them serial number, fitter sent took it apart, then realised it wasn't right bearing, went back to base and came back in afternoon. Would have been cheaper to put on trailer and drive 20 miles and sit in yard all day. But you learn the hard way.

We assumed the fitter had done this, the problem I think is the rubber seal next to impeller had gone again, resulting in the slurry being forced back up through the frame and then through the other bearing.

I borrowed a malgar type stirrer and was shocked how slow it was.
This is why I built my first Mixit stirrer.
The thinking was- if the tube, with the Malgar, supports the rotating shaft, then why not use the tube as the shaft.
This allowed me to remove all bearings from the slurry which was a great improvement.
Suddenly one could stir anything - string, baled silage, weeds galore etc. all with no bearing problem.
The tube then allowed an impeller of any axial length, which allowed multi-stage impellers to stop cavitation
and up the power output to the limit of the pto.
The auger was added to allow thick crust to pass the tube without stopping and to reduce any side loading.
The auger also allows one to drop the stirrer onto thick crust when commencing the stir,
and it cuts through this crust to reach the liquid without sawing back and forth.

Regarding bearings, the life depends on correct set up, and no regular dunking in the slurry.
I would say average life of the main bearing is 7 years. Cost around £90.
All bearings are easy to access and sit on tapered sleeves - so no grub screws to damage shafts etc.
The Mixit 25ft stirrer is £2200 with a Walterscheid star tube Pto - so not uncompetitive.
The impellers deliver a genuine 80-200 hp. without cavitation.
Thankyou C.J for your email tip.
