Moat bank collapsing

we have done some work on retaining walls , we drive steel posts into the base of the bank edge below the water line ( 2m) and then drop sectional walling in that sits on the posts ( sections made from heavy box section and timber ) once all in place retaining pins go through the box section into the river bank ( 4-6m depending on wall height/water depth ) for us it means we can fabricate everything off site and arrive and install sections very quickly with everything easily made on farm

buy some of these and dig them into the moat. Will last years and shore up the bank nicely, or posts and railway sleepers. Slot the sleepers in between the posts.

We have problems with our moat too. Think the water level was allowed to get too high. Got to the point where some piling is in order now I think. The garage hasn't got much bank left to lose. Some good suggestions in this thread though.

Slightly different, but in teh same vein...

As part of the house renovation project, I had a 13t 360 did out a pond and drag the spoil onto a nearby bank. I settled on Stakes pushed in, then timber between the stakes allowed the land to dry out and stabilise.

I was approached by a laday with a property next to a main stream, who was seeing serious erosion problems getting close to the property. Council and EA both refused any liability or ownership of the problem, and I was approached to pop over informally to see if teh PC could lobby on their behalf (it couldn't).

My suggestion was 6" treated drivers knocked in to the brook bed tight on the inside of the bends of the bank, or old motorway barrier. (tight budget here...) In the end, they had someone drive fence stakes in which have held for several years now.... However, they probably did the best thing.... sold up and moved!
