Mob Breeding

They are currently fully performance recorded, so by a combination of EBVs, easy care traits and conformation. However, I am considering cutting the sheep back and having an easier life which may mean not recording them properly any more.

I think mob breeding is a great way to create a setting or context which reduces work and at the same time can help your breeding/genetics improve.
Maybe using more than 5 per 100 will reduce the need to identify/ record who is the top 5. I'd just be cautious about not favoring single born tup lambs.

I been thinking that by using DNA testing with signet proformance recording it would be possible to have.
One mod that contains the lower 75% of F and top 10% of newly created M
Cull any inbreeding
Two mods that contains between them the highest 25% of F and confirmed highest 5% M
With the two top mods chosen to advoid inbreeding and the lower mod testing out the new M.

We had a (now deceased) neighbour who had the earliest, or possibly, the latest, lambing in the county.

Seems kind of funky to think he was actually a trendsetter in agriculture and 21C farming.
Some sheep beeds will self regulate lambing cycles based on day length. I expect it could be selected for.

That would have been far to complex and sophisticated for the guy in question...
Would it, as lambs born at a time of year they are unlikely to live will be culled out.

(With added data cull any ewe that fails to give you a nice Sunday lunch for two years.)

Go on...

It's far enough back to tell us what happened?

A little jab, or a new addition to the herd?
Didn’t catch. Can’t remember for sure but bull calf was most likely booted out with the big bull and bred cows for exclusion purposes

He was let back with the heifers in June and had his little passel of calves the next spring instead of November (I wouldn’t really want to be calving heifers in November here!)

A good outcome then.....

Having seen Dexters catch to the Bull at stupidly young ages.... I learned to be very careful after an expensive caesar op.... ;)

She probably would’ve been okay but I’m always paranoid about heifers and that bull was an unknown at that point. Could’ve tossed monsters.
