Signal strength has nothing to do with mine varying speed. The signal is excellent and as good as it gets, yet the speed varies, often I suspect by the time of day and traffic on the network, although not sure because most of the hoards of tourists in the area have gone home and it still varies. It may just be the nature of the beast. G5 will probably be worse in rural areas and we shall have to wait for 6G for a far more robust and reliable super-speed network where everything is connected to everything else. G upgrades tend to happen once a decade, so considering that we are in the first year of 5G, it will be 2031 or later before we get 6G around here.

OK, but it`s a guide to what`s possible.
If you only have 1 bar of signal you will never get high speeds
When we started the signal was from a 3G mast 5 miles away. 1 -2 bars speed 10 - 15 mbps (with the router in the gable peak of the cow shed )
Then the local mast 1.5 miles away was upgraded to 4G . 3 -4 bars, speed well over 50 mbps (Router anywhere you like. )

i am on ee broadband which is excellent but totally dependant on signal strength. Being old stone house with 3G windows it is a bit of a Faraday cage so I do have to be selective of which room to use depending on speed I require. Only been dead once which I found out from ee was down to work on a local mast.

External antennae mounted no more than five meter run from the router, can give a huge increase in speed in this kind of situation. You also need to reconfigure the settings on the router to accommodate the external antennae!

Not all routers have antenna sockets, Often the ones provided as part of a contract

why not radio waves? I was given a quote for around £30 over my existing £70 for renewal. On business contract. I was prev to this running EE BB and it was costing a fortune as was going over the data plus dropped 4G and so so slow.

Its very weather sensitive though and can get random down town.
