moisture content of muck

one thing i've always puzzled about when calculating fym nutrients/application rates is moisture content.....surely it varies thus making tonnes applied worthless...for starters muck spread from inside is going to be lower than field clamps

Couldn’t agree more with keep it simple I’d say in our heaps dm is double at the bottom at what it is at the top. Perhaps we’re in a position which we have a lot of muck so can get over the ground but a muckspreader full to the acre is as scientific as I feel is needed.

Soss, I was trying to make an amusing remark about measurements of quantity. backfired! Such as newspapers saying something is twice the height of Nelsons column, rather than say it is 100 metres, so the average person can gauge the size. You said muckspreader - but not a size. I wondered if it was the size of an elephant, then that leads me to ask African or Indian, male or female. Sorry even I struggle sometimes with my sense of humour, so pity the poor recipient.

Does it fudging matter? We know dung works. The book values are a very rough guess. You can get the stuff tested if you really need to know what it's DM and nutrient values are.

Of course it matters. You need to have a number to work out figures for your NVZ records. Without a massively inaccurate base figure to multiply up, how on Earth can you hope to have anything meaningful to put down to keep the inspectors happy?

Could always weigh it, then bake it and then weigh again to calculate the moisture content.
