Mole Catchers

If mole catchers charge per mole caught how do you know he caught them on your ground and not just taking dead moles from farm to farm. Not saying all mole catchers are dishonest but years ago I used to go lamping with someone who would catch a couple of foxes and take them from farm to farm claiming he had caught them on that farmers ground!!.

Hence why I asked.

We've used james price mole services as mentioned at the start of the thread . Hes good, think its a £40 set up fee and then £10 per mole and he always leaves the moles in a bag or a bucket. Can send you him number if needed but hes definitely on face ache advertising his business

I have to admit, the mole hills look like cow pats with all this rain, but there are quite a few now and moving on up to what will become the garden.

Another way that supposedly works (esp in a garden where you may not want to trap), it to insert one of those toy windmill things into the runs. Apparently the vibrations deter moles

Crack on,get some traps and go for it.

Its not difficult, put the trap in where they are working recently, make sure you clean the soil from the run then carefully place the trap making sure you secure it with some soft soil so it can’t move.

If it doesn’t catch in a day move it.

Monitor the hole afterwards and if it gets dug through then replace the trap.

@neilo recommended these and they are very good, also cheap.

They were recommended to me by a guy that runs a couple of hundred traps and is constantly on clearing local farms every winter. I’ve yet to find any better, especially at the price.

I do have a box of cheaper ones if anyone wants them.:)

There are plenty of internet sources of advice on mole trapping available these days. Like much of what you can read on the internet 🤐, some of it is nonsense, but it’s a good start.

New traps work just fine btw, no need to bury them for a week and all the other nonsense. Clean hands are fine too, but I wear disposable gloves just to keep my hands cleaner.

I use cheap plastic balloon holders (£6 a 100) as trap markers, after a post on here.👍 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Karaloon-4...sticks&qid=1608541955&sr=8-11&tag=googhydr-21

I ordered the Flag Markers as it was in the suggestion buy together. now got to brush up on the videos to get a kind of understanding.
Gonna be messy, that is a cert as the fields are sodden - so I do have doubts over efficacy in this wet weather.

Some decades ago you could buy stryctnene from a chemist. I have a vague memory of going on a course on how to use it for mole control. I bought some from Boots. The method was to put some in a jam jar and add some worms, they wriggle a lot so I guess it's an unpleasant experience for them! I only did it once it's extreemly dangerous stuff. Banned now of course ang quite rightly so.
Dad used to do the worm & strychnine thing quite a bit round these parts - especially where chemist's were chary about letting certain farmers acquire strychnine.

Hence it’s name ... a corruption of “strike nine” ie it has the ability to kill nine times
Old wives tale - it actually comes from the name of the plant it is derived from - Strychnos nux-vomica - Strychnos derives from the Greek "strukhnos", which is Sleepy Nightshade.
