Mole trap advice

I’ve had no success with the Talpex traps this Autumn, so they’re back in a bucket. Barrel traps have been working well though. Last time I was trapping, the Talpex were catching nearly every time.:scratchhead: Different soil conditions maybe?

I’ve noticed small stones interfering with talpex trap closure.

At least once the jaws have not closed properly because a stone has jammed.

As said, persistence and flooding the area with traps for persistent offenders with a swap from barrel to talpex.

I always set traps where they are working and if not caught or set off /filled with soil/bypassed within a day they are moved,if only a few feet further.

This has inspired me. I'm going to dig the mole trap out of the cupboard and have a go tomorrow.

If I get to it around heptavacing sheep.

If you’re feeling that inspired, I have a bag of scissor traps that have been modified as suggested on that website. Free to collect, as I won’t be using them again......

No moles or no luck?

Plenty of moles, and lots of luck with Duffus and Talpex traps (when I have a session of setting them). I don’t recall catching a single one in a scissor trap.

What he says about the technique about finding the runs, firming the bottom of the run, etc, is all good though.(y)

Don’t know but I sometimes think varying which type of trap is used confuses the little buggers and helps catch them. Certainly had one last week that filled the barrel type twice last week so I put a couple of putanges in and that was the end of him
most of my traps are barrel type which i get away with ok, but if i get them backfilled a couple times in the same area i usually swap for talpex

Scissor traps work well for me. Find a hard well used tunnel is the key thing often near a gatehole, along a fence line or near a road or that goes to a water source like a ditch. Should keep on pulling them out. Set the trigger so it moves easy back and forth before tripping. Cover with moss then soil on top.

Finding the right well used run is key. Had 82 out of one arterial run one year and often not obvious where it is. Feeding runs out in the field, well you might get one opportunistically but generally they are waste of time.

Yes, couple walking through my yard yesterday along footpath proceeded to kick all my mole traps into the ground and pull out and throw into the woods the ones they couldn’t !
When I challenged them they refused to speak and just carried on walking just before trying to knock me off my quad !
Catching moles seems to becoming a dangerous practice

This was my very first, so I'm not qualified :) I set ten traps and caught one.

Following the advice on http://www.walcotefarm.co.uk/molecatching/trapsites.htm I did actually get it on a boundary, coming in from woodland, but that could just be a coincidence of course.
