I read that it is endemic in small rodents in Africa, and that monkeys or humans catch it from them.

Smallpox vaccine is so ancient I'm surprised it is still being made.

As a youngster we used to hand milk cows with cowpox on their teats with no ill effects, wonder if this gives us immunity from monkey pox?

Iot should do as the smallpox vaccine is actually Cowpox. The vaccine probably stopped you getting cowpox.
Cowpox is very minor issue to humans I had very small vesicles between my fingers
