Monsanto court case

Maybe that's all part of the "plan" a new chemical waiting in the wings with a shiny new patent at 10x ££££'s

Probably, I know the likes of JD had been prototyping the 8000 series SPFH for over 10 years - just after the 7000 series came out, they released the 7050 and 7080 between the 7000 and 8000 series so surely Monsanto and other pesticide manufactures already have the alternative to glyphosate and are waiting for the 11th hour until they HAVE to release it. Why else would Bayer CS buy Monsanto if glyphosate is to be banned in the EU sooner rather than later.

IF you look online they still use DDT, aldrin and a lot of other insecticides in under developed countries - but who’s producing them I’m not sure?

Guy, I’m hoping you’ll remember where this happened but it was an interested read.

Last year I remember reading somewhere I think about allowing GM to be legal in the EU and they quoted in the trial how many tonnes of sweet corn you’d need to eat for a thistle/nettle to die from your urine. Basically you couldn’t digest the tonnages they were on About but your urine would kill the plant within a few days/week anyway (y)

It was beer.

Some German institute found a few parts per billion of glyphosate in beer. The Germans like their beer so it made headlines, but the brewers responded that you'd have to drink 3000 litres in one day to exceed the maximum allowable exposure. Of course, even if it were possible to consume such a vast quantity (some of you may have tried) the alcahol and other "safe" chemicals would have long since killed you.

The better question is how the traces of glyphosate got there. It's because farmers (including many on this forum) glyphosate malting barley pre harvest despite the practise being banned. It's your behaviour that will get this vital product banned. Don't do it!

I think if the US courts can find Johnson & Johnson guilty to the tune of $4 billion for producing talcum powder that has allegedly caused cancer in 22 women. What chance has Monsanto got. :banghead:

This is an interesting case. Firstly must point out that they have already been fined in California about 500 million dollars but that was later kicked out by a higher court and we can expect this one to go further.
It is very difficult to argue that Talcum is not Asbestos, it is chemically identical.
however this is white asbestos and there is little strong science to indicate white asbestos is harmful and is unlikely would have been banned, if the material had not been given the same name as two different materials Brown and blue, which are both know to be strong carcinogens.
however it is banned although still large quantities are used in Russia and China.
With there courts ruling that white asbestos is banned it is difficult for J&J to fight this.
The next question is the actual cause of the cancer that these women suffered and proving that it was caused by the asbestos.
With mesophelioma it is relatively easy to detect asbestos particles in the lungs thus a fair bet it caused the issues as it does not appear unless asbestos is found.
However these women sadly died or suffered from ovarian cancer. Asbestos has not yet been shown to be able to be absorbed by the body by conventional means of ingestion. However I believe the case is that they used talc as a means of refreshing certain delicate parts.
It is important to remember this is not a conventional criminal court , J&J have not been convicted. The evidence level in a civil court is lower and cases are judged on likelihood rather than actual proof of guilt.
J&J will have a very difficult time to prove they are innocent of causing the issue as they will be trying to prove a negative

I don't really buy into these anti-corporate conspiracy theories but the ag-Chem Giants were secretly hoping glyphosate would be banned so they could then release a more expensive replacement that they are sitting On then that's all the more reason for farmers to lobby for the regulator to listen to the science not the anti science and to continue to re licence glyphosate just as it has been for the last forty years.

If you looked hard enough you would find most chemicals used in industry or agriculture were carcinogenic or similar. Petrol and diesel both contain carcinogenic compounds, how many here refuse to wear gloves when handling them?

I'm shocked by the number who don't wear dust masks.

So that leaves me with "smaller scale mixed farming" The mixed farming bit is fine but why do you think smaller scale is better?

You need to get with the agenda. "Small scale" farmers, like farmer Giles down the road, are good honest food producers who deeply care for the environment and their animals. They wouldn't need subs, if only they were paid a fair price for their produce.

Contrast them with the big nasty evil factory farms that care for nothing but profit. These factory farms delight in torturing animals and love to pollute the environment. If they can poison the food they're producing then even better!

^such appears to be the beliefs of large sections of the population. When questioned they don't seem able to accurately identify an evil corporate factory farms beyond the latest "shock" video expose from PETA.
