Mmmmmmmm . Bought a cow and calf last yr with 3 mth old calf at foot . (Her own) PD back in calf ....and she was !
Calf was born when her calf was only 8 mths old ( going by the paperwork) . ......so I assume some do get their dates mixed up .....🤔😉

Hmmmm! I had a similiar instance and had an unhappy BCMS querying the dates. I called them and said I had bought the animals in, and had to assume the 1st calf birth dates were correct.... Heard no more, thankfully.

Went to store sale at Leek on Saturday, couldn’t help but notice a run of cattle that were meant to be from 5 - 8 months old that looked more like 14 months. Am I missing a trick, is there some miracle feed out there ? Or maybe a miracle breed? Or do people just get their dates muddle up ? 🤔
There's a lot of rushes and gorse up on them moors around Leek, it's easy to lose a calf for a while 😉😂🙄

It is a phenomenon that sometimes occurs in Wales as well; and I've a fancy that some beasts I've seen at mart in the Borders are evidence that it's found in Scotland now and then too ... 😐

With the current BCMS rules it is not surprising - due to overwork I missed booking in some calves this spring during the 28 day window - the worst of the 4 was 5 days overdue.

Being an honest sort I put the actual birth dates on the application - now I have to have a DNA test on mothers and calves before I can get a passport.

They won't catch me like that again - being honest.

The dew claws (those about 3'' above the hoof in the above diagram, can give an indication of age.

And the tail is often a giveaway. In calves up to about 6 months, the tail should still be short, and top half of the tail should still be flattish, with the hairs projecting out each side horizontally. And it is amazing that some sellers of calves with false ages don't even have the sense to trim the end of the tail.

And what about those that sell Simmental or Charolais cross calves with a named Angus sire on the passport. :scratchhead:

Same happened to me, registered a calf late, was honest about it and ended up having to get cow and calf DNA tested. Won't make that mistake again.

I was once fortunate enough to be asked to an evening meeting where the "men from the ministry" were keen to hear the views of the guys with sh*t on their boots as to how things could be improved. A that time I had a few sucklers and made the point that a one man band type guy could sometime struggle to SAFELY tag a calf "in the field" within 28 days (for example a late born one), and wondered if maybe some flexibility or a longer window (for example 6 weeks max age) might be a good idea.
Long story cut short... A smartarse wealthy farmers son just cra*ped on me big time by telling us all how easy it was with this system and that equipment, etc.,etc, etc.....What a merchant banker...... No wonder we get landed with all this big brother regulation.

Tagging is one thing, registering is another🤔

I would imagine we have a couple of untagged calves out at the moment but they will be registered

I know I’ve got one. I’m not gathering all our lot in just too tag one calf that will happily wait a bit longer. Got his passport here but I’m not risking hurting anything through unnecessary handling of the herd!
