Moonlighting bays

Watching a video tonight about moonlighting bays in the US got me thinking whether they were still going in the UK ?
You need to work on your car but haven't got access to a hoist, pit, garage equipment etc these bays gave an opportunity for people to do the work themselves on their vehicles, these bays only being available after normal working hours.

I think manufacturers have done everything possible in order to prevent people working on their own cars, somewhere do do it is probably the smallest of obstacles.

There were a couple of car lifts for hire on local ind estate.
I know the job always overruns.

There's a bit of an issue around insurance - underwriters tend to be a bit nervous about letting people operate hoists etc for some reason.

On the video I was watching only garage staff were allowed to operate the hoists, they had wingmen in the garage if you needed help for a fee, obviously less than normal garage rates.

Many years ago anyone working for David Brown, both tractor and gear companies, could use a facility which was offsite of either division.

I believe that it had pits and drive up ramps, nothing lifting.

Because the tractor division had more ex car mechanics than you can throw a stick at there was always someone to either help or for a couple of quid do the job for them. Father in law told me it was so busy you'd to book well in advance to use the place. 3 hours at night and weekends.

There's a fuel station and shop on the site now, the old building was demolished.

I’d say with the finance culture most just buy their own. Plenty of new Chinese ones for circa £1850 out there. Second hand ones on Facebook market place seem more than the new ones too!

The problem is that it's still a relatively high risk profile having what is effectively untrained members of the public messing around in such an environment. HSE would have a field day if someone got hurt...
