More money isn't always the answer -- why did you LEAVE?

But I disgress
Back to topic- seems a familiar theme that poor/nasty/self serving middle management is the main cause of folk leaving a role. I wonder if companies are aware of this - the top banana, or boardroom, are usually OK, its just the cretins in the middle that create most of the unrest?
That is usually why I left. Uriah Heape types who fawn around the upper management, saying and doing the right things in plain view but the opposite when out of sight. Try to tell the boss the truth and you are immediately the bad guy. No problems since going self employed and not nearly as difficult as I expected once I'd taken the plunge.

Most top management are probably at least partially aware of this, but as I suspect this whole situation is part of the human condition, they realise that it's almost impossible to solve, and if profit are at least okay, they aren't going to rock the boat in order to make others lives better. Depressing but true.

Left main job one as there was little path to progress along really and it was obvious my role would be swallowed up by parent company in time.

I have been very fortunate with all the seasonal or gap jobs I have ever worked at really, employers all accommodating and rock solid people to work for. All kit up together as well which is no small thing these days given the potential fines these days. Good crews as well, all sound folk largely and easy to work with despite being the new guy and totally s&%t at most things.

I left my last job as I knew too much and was pee'd off with working stupid hours.... It was a fast sinking ship too big too fast... 300 Vehicles with the mentality of still running 5.

Absolute Clown Management... I was doing my own thing anyway often in their time and in their office.. Managers wouldn't say a peep. I had a sarcastic letter from the new General Manager saying he wanted more from me.

I had that 3 weeks after he sent it as my Managers withheld it due to my policy of "say what you see and radical honesty" I was basically doing their job and my own.

Day of having the letter I emailed him back pointing out a whole world of sh!t and told him to stick his job up his arse as of now .... " By the time you read this I'll be up the road gone"

Never looked back... Had a few good mates there left around the same time before it was Nuked by HMRC and others.

There is always better to be had out there....

I left my last job because of rotating shifts. It was OK for a while (ten years) but it slowly wears you down. Management were completely over the top with H&S making a good job a pain but when it came to the most dangerous thing THEY did, making people flip shifts every 3 days, they completely ignored it.
Management of course didn't do shift work.

I started at the last shower on 4 til Midnight 6 days.... then 3 til Midnight.... then 3 til whenever... then 12- Whenever Then I found the works phone ringing 24-7 and I lived out of my car or Transit service van. Started having every other Sat off but was still not enough.. Having that Saturday off was giving them the earth.

Money was good ... Paid every minute on the card.... But there is more to life than lying under a bus at 4 AM in the rain.

I'll be dead honest that job right f**ked my head up and I reckon it gave me some sort of PTSD.... I know of a couple of others who worked there far deeper in than me and they arent normal.

Just...wow. The money must have brilliant, but I couldn't have worked like that even when I was 20.

Did nearly six years as a shift manager in a steel section rolling mill on continental shifts...could never get used to them. One of the most jaw dropping and dangerous jobs I've ever done. Luckily the steel price dropped and the place shut down and made me redundant. H&S was a laugh.

Similar tale?

There's more to life... One Manager I got on with is driving for a big company loves it... 40 Hours plus Overtime or days off, was doing 100 + Where we worked together.
yes, similar. he works for the biggest breakdown firm in the area. he is workshop foreman (sole mechanic) and is on call for road side repairs and has his hiab ticket. does everything from wheel changes, lockouts etc to repairing flash cars. he likes the job but has had about 6 days off in the last 8 weeks. when he is off his phone is always ringing. very stressful and as you said it f++++s your head. 80hr (paid) weeks are common but he treats it like his own business so can't see him changing. it has already cost him his marraige.

It could all be gone tomorrow.... Then what? Was it worth it? Dragging something of the M20 at 3am? When you started at 11am.

I had an OK Manager who would put the hours in... Stupid hours and I'd do what I did because of him.... 2 Way Street... Unorthodox blow your mind Irish, a wrongun but a good guy at the same time that would win your respect,... He had the same pressure from the new GM... Buckled and left, Made my life easier but newbie had 80 disgruntled drivers who came to me like I was working for the Samaritans as unofficial 2nd in command.

2 Yard Managers later on mega ££££s I'd lost my knowledge and was playing silly buggers with them ...,. We'd run out of AdBlue Run out of Diesel for fun.. I'd Forget things etc etc

But I don't work like that. Uncomfortable experience so receibing the GMs letter demanding more it was simple to say
