Morrisons owning there own abbatoirs are in a prime position to put well matured decent product on there shelves yet they still churn out cling filmed packs of uninspiring meat , even there fully trained butchers:unsure: have little knowledge of the products they are selling. Tis a sad fact that to mrs average housewife it don't matter were it comes from if it suits her budget she will buy it.

Their slogan is "More reasons to shop at Morrisons" !!!! What a joke ....

Not sure Sir Ken would be impressed with Aussie Lamb being sold in his stores .A born and bred Yorkshire bloke
Cant believe that the "M" brand shelf logo is situated on the shelf by this product.
consumers are being mislead by such on shelf advertising .

Morrisons are not doing themselves any favours......
Why dont they support the "Best of British? "

All the supermarkets now label roasting joints as slow roast or just roast - no more topside, silverside, rib etc. SOME housewives know their meat and know what they want to buy, not be fobbed off with a bit of chuck rolled to look posh.

The Aussies export alot of meat to the Middle East don't they? I wonder if this Morrison's Australian Lamb is Halal too, doesn't exactly fit in too well with what it says on their website under the section "Our Company and Policies".

I quote
"Morrisons recognises the importance religious communities attach to food produced in accordance with their beliefs, and in response to customer demand we sell a number of branded halal and kosher products. Our customers who do not wish to purchase halal or kosher can choose our fresh meat in full confidence that all animals are pre-stunned and no prayer is read at slaughter. Our fresh meat is 100% British and uniquely the majority is processed at our own abattoirs – giving us unrivalled control over the provenance and quality of our meat."

If anyone is interested I received a reply this morning to an email I sent to Morrison's customer services on 26th October. Given the length of time it has taken for them to respond someone has clearly put some effort into answering my queries, which makes a nice change from being fobbed off.

I raised the following points in my email.
1. Why have Morrison's started to supply imported lamb during the height of the British lamb season. (Although I don't myself know that this is a recent phenomenon, I was only made aware of it by this thread)
2. Why do Morrison's insist that all their British lamb must be farm assured, to only then import lamb uncutting the British produce with a product with lower welfare standards, I specifically asked if the sheep were subject to Mulesing.
3. I asked if the lamb that there were importing from Australia was Halal. (I don't have a problem with Halal myself as long as its carried out properly, however there is a statement on the Morrison's website which is have quoted before

I appreciate that there are a number of people who don't want to be eating Halal meat and I fully agree that meat that is prepared in this way should be labelled as such.

Email Response is as follows

"Thank you for your email in which you raised a number of queries about our lamb.

We sell a small proportion of imported lamb in order to stay competitive on price and meet the needs of customers on a budget. However, it is important to point out that the vast majority of fresh meat we sell (including lamb) will continue to be sourced direct from British farmers and processed at our own abattoirs, which is a commitment no other supermarket can match. Operating three abattoirs in Britain not only supports British farmers, it gives us unrivalled control over the quality of our meat.
Of course, in these tough economic times we have to offer customers the choice of more affordable alternatives, but we are careful to clearly label our products so that customers know where the meat comes from and can make properly informed decisions. And we believe that by keeping the Morrisons brand British for fresh meat, we are making it easier for customers to find home produced product.
Turning specifically to method of slaughter and mulesing. I can confirm that the meat we source from Australia (and New Zealand) is all stunned before slaughter, and our vacuum packed fresh lamb imported from Australia is not subject to mulesing, in line with our welfare requirements on fresh meat.
I hope this reply is helpful.
Thanks again for contacting us.
Kindest regards

Morrisons Supermarkets PLC"

Incidentally I never asked them whether the lamb was pre-stunned, I asked whether it was Halal or not, given that most halal meat in Austrlia is pre stunned before slaughter, you can draw your own conclusions as to why they answered a different question to the one I asked.

Morrisons butchers dont know really very much if you ask them a question, I asked for some fillet of beef, I asked what breed was it from, ..the chap said 'it was a 'heifer', yes I said from a heifer but what was the breed? 'he said a heifer' 'its a heifer', I said yes ok, its a heifer but what breed of is it from, he said 'A HEIFER' thats its breed ! ... I had to laugh he then went on to tell me he had been to their abattoirs to see them killed and its HEIFERS!!! ... I just could not stop laughing and had to walk away, then returned to tell him that a heifer wasn't a breed but the sex, ..... So much for Morrisons training ..:LOL:

I'm surprised you had to send an email @Big Al , I believe you don't live far from someone quite high up in Morrison's meat procurement.;) I did pull his leg about the Ozzy lamb last week.

I was tempted to go in and see him. By the way do you know if he procures his own meat for morrisons? ;)
It's not achieved anything, although they have revised their website to say that only Morrison's branded meat is British and labelled as halal or not as the case may be . I think I'll send them a bill for my editing work. :D

intresting on the mulesing most of the prime lamb would come from cross breed flocks larger lamb cuts to the USA out of merinos that are older shoren for there wool as well as well as merino X

first time i seen mulesing done i thought WTF is going on here i had worked in a killing plant for dog food and yer seen a few strange things then animals to put down etc etc so work hardened .. but then if you think of the common fly and blowies and the efect they have times that by about 100 and thats what the ozzie fly is like
