Don't shout & lose your temper over something small or none exsistance, then sulk & not spk to anyone for the rest of the day.

Avoiding the above would be a good start. Yes it's only 11am and yes I'm about ready to tell brother to loss the attitude or lose the help!

Think my staff would scoff at some vouchers, etc.

Would probably value a night out, better facilities, etc

Well that may be so, you as a boss would have to have a better idea of what they might like. I was purely using Vouchers as an example. But as above also re the "Don't shout & loose your temper" IME you should only use that kind of thing as a last resort. Most people with minds of their own react adversely to that kind of management anyway.

Treat people as you wish to be treated and look after the good ones, because they're the ones that look after things when you're not around.

im trying to get him to think for himself n do jobs to a good standard, apperently he does anything anybody else asks
Without pointing fingers as I don't know the facts,so do you see the problem with you or the staff member?I used to have problems with staff but has been said shouting at them isn't the way forward.I aren't suggesting you do by the way, merely pointing out it was me not them in my case

well i think a bit of both, im fussy n have no people skills, i never see him notice lame cows etc
BUT when i was on holiday he spotted a dry cow with mastitis n 2 lame cows from the same group, he even got them into the holding pen himself
i do feel that while i do things he does not bother too much

Maybe he does nothing when your there as he feels you'll criticise or pick him up on something or maybe its he see's it as your job to do the work and he shouldn't if your there?best way forward is possibly to have a "chat" were you both communicate.Communication is half the battle and none of us are extremely gifted at that. You ask him what he thinks his job entails and ask him to ask you any points he's unsure of.Just try not to make it like a formal questioning more of a how are you getting along type chat
