We have been strip tilling with a claydon hybrid 3 metre for 6 years. Going very well. Looking at the possibility of going to zero till. We are doing variable seed and N. Claydon is brilliant for rape. I like that leading tine going down 6-7 inches. Running a sumo GLS infront if needed. What are peoples experiance of cross slot drills for drilling rape wheat beans on soils ranging from medium clay loam to silty clay ?????

Keep the claydon and buy a disc drill then you have loads of options its not an offence to have two different drills .

You can buy a disc kit for the Claydon that fits where the leading tine goes. Easy to swap & @juke has used his a lot. He was also looking at no till drills after running the Claydon for a few years.

We use the leading disc for all cereal drilling only using the leading tine for beans and osr.
We did try a 750 last year and it was awesome but after a revisal of thought our plans are to continue going forward with the claydon and not bother with a disc drill for a few reasons.
Cost of another drill to run alongside the claydon would probably be prohbitive . also even tho we got on well after a bit of careful watching of others in the locality that are using no till drills and I suppose more knolwddge of the job, we can't afford their poor crops . So for the foreseeable future we will be continuing with our claydon.

Afternoon Juke. How are yields with the disc in front? Do you get enough tilth with the disc? We are on medium to heavy clay loam that will be like concrete this year I'm sure. I guess it won't bring up so many boulders with the disc?

4.3 tons to the acre last year in wheat was our average, so no yield penalty at all, I cant comment on this year for how well it will penetrate ill tell you better in September once its been in the ground but I don't forsee any problems , no boulders or anything , the a share does the majority of the work here in regards to tilth etc. the disc will go in a few inches and bring up a little as its cutting through, we have drilled into big cover crops with it, stubbles just about every scenario going its never let us down or blocked, we prefer the disc to the tine for cereals, hope that's of help
