Mowing at night after a sunny day

Broke all the rules tonight now I g grass at nearly dark
It’s been a brilliant sunny day so thought just go for it tonight have I done the right thing weather looks to be bit unsettled after Thursday again.

Sugars rise in the sun and drop back over night, so probably better mowing into the night than early morning plus depending on weather dew will be in the grass early morning but not early night.

Ultimately weather is king, silaging in good weather is far better than doing it in the wet, don't over think it just aim for good weather.

Sugars rise during the day but when you cut in the afternoon respiration continues over night and the plant burns a lot of the sugar off anyway. Less of this happens if you have cool nights though. They real key is cutting it when it allows you to get it in the bale or pit as quick as possible.

Our best silage was always cut morning and baled a few hours later. We have the conditions for that though.

Would you still ted with this heat with a conditioned mower?
We cut all our 62 acres of grass for bales in the 2 days ,and then baled over a 3 day period without touching a swath.
Stress about throwing it out and raking most years (hire both machines ) so nice to get by without all that mither !!
( Our baler man prefers to pick up single rows from the 2.8 m Lely mower we use, too !! )
Makes some beautiful barrell shaped bales from his Fusion 3 , (not so ,if its raked sometimes )and the best and earliest silage we have made , for many a year !!
(finished last night ,500 bales )
Fert on , seperated liquid on ,and fingers crossed for a bumper second and third cut , as the 500 bales this year is usually nearer 670

Doesn't seem that long ago that 48hr wilting for high DM silage was all the rage, soon we'll be back to direct cut.
Joking aside
Why not if it's hot enough and dry enough.
It is hardly ever is though.
Only remember it being the case once.
Last year on second cut. Started cutting at 5am started picking up athe 12 pm caught the mower up by 6pm carried on till finished at 10pm 160 acres cleared. Very good silage. Intake factor +130 dm 30% me +12. Not often we don't get a dew.

Shortest time from mow to chop to get to 30% dm
Atm We get 12-15 hrs daylight.
24hr should be sufficient or longest time p. But grass doesn't wilt at night and can take couple hour to dry the dew in the morning. But to each there own.
