Some buggers seem to have an easy life.
Speshly them rich ones with Dysons
We have to let the kids get sticky and then roll them on the carpet to pick up fluff :cry::cry:

But yeah, why not both? (y) One of the downsides of land ownership is that most of the cash is tied up in it, limiting what else you can invest in - but same can't be said for time.... always more hours in a day if you really want a thing bad enough.
not sure how old you are Pete, I am by know means old but find if I start pushing on these days I just start falling asleep
middle of the night checks of @farmerclare 's sheep help with this
time to out them and get some of those easycare ones, you only have to see them once a year to take the lambs to market and pick up the money don't you @GTB ? :D

ok ......tax avoidence isn't illegal ....though HMRC has a 30+ list under review....the point i'm trying to make is that we risk loosing APR because it's being used for a perfectly legal, but unintended purpose

Oh.
FFS.
Is APR really relevant to the debate?
Has Dyson come on here and said it's the reason he's going big into land ownership and farming?
Last I heard, he was still alive and kicking and chances are APR will be abolished by the time he pops his clogs, anyways.
And I would doubt his demise would be relevant to the ownership of his farms.
Probably all owned by a holding company in the Cayman Islands.

Not completely, he moved production out of the UK (Wiltshire) to Malaysia so he could take advantage of cheap labour and lower standards. Plenty of job losses

That was because the North Wilts planners wouldn’t allow him to expand his production facilities in Malmesbury. An own goal by the planners, though I suspect that wasn’t the only reason he moved production abroad ;)

The one in my area buying a vast amount of the best land on earth, made his fortune selling ''cold cut'' sandwiches. Started while in school and worth hundreds of millions by his fortieth birthday. He started out buying rough ground to hunt and expanded from that. He does expect the farmland to cash flow.

What factors would influence land value /type of purchaser in the us and would price be restricted by production potential ?

In my area it is the production value. There is an access to markets and transportation infrastructure. Drainage would be the biggest limiting factor since we are very ''flat'' and level. As far as the rest of the US it varies vastly as does the price of land. It would be hard for an outsider to grasp how big and varied this country is.

So in theory the way the land could be practically used and income derived from it would decide the buyer and value/price ?

Inheritance tax has done some harm in the past, im pleased for Mr dyson and pleased hes chosen to farm, the folk up here with pots of gold buying farms fast and furious at the moment which is ok but they all choose to plant them in sitca spruce which spoils the landscape for ever imo(coincidentally Kielder forest was started due too inheritance tax) , times change some for the better some for the worse, idsay linconshire will be a better placee with JD than without him.
Aussie abolished death duty (IHT) around 40 years ago. Maybe it’s time the UK followed suit, like it has (finally) with super. Might learn a thing or two from the antipodeans ;)

Why so hard on Dyson ? he is just a bit player in the world of large land owners in the UK.
He does seem to be putting large amounts into upgrading his farms, certainly far more than
is invested into estates that let their land.
As an owner farming his own land he could well be the driver for lots of innovation, and can
well afford a few failures on the way to success, something that most of us can not

Would you jealous types rather see these blocks of land sold to investors, pension company sorts and then rented out on short term FBTs?? Around our way so much land is owned and farmed like that , and it’s not a pretty site.
