if buying a new computer
get a graphics card with two out puts

got a work computer with motors ,...work really well

my old computer had a plug device and it was faff to set up for two monitors

There is no need to buy a pc with a standalone graphics card. Most modern integrated graphics card will run up to 3 monitors - 1 VGA, 1 DVI, 1 HDMI.

The only reason to buy a geaphics card is for gaming, 3D modelling, video editing etc. For normal office stuff and watching videos etc the integrated video card on the CPU will be more than fine and the standalone graphics card just wasted. The exception to the above is if you want a very high resolution, that won't run on VGA or DVI, or if you want to use DP(display port) instead of HDMI.

You are right but it very much depend on the motherboard- not all of them have multiple display outputs!

I use a docking station on my laptop so i can run two external monitors plus the laptop display.
I find it essential for comparing documents or copying from one to another as all the information is on display at the same time.
I got two monitors the same size so that they appear as similar as possible to make it easier on the eyes.

I like your mouse.

Tried that keyboard, didn't get on with it.

which one please?
they have two types - ball in centre, ball on left.
I suffer RSI hence the "special" keyboard and mouse.
thanks

Ball on left. I’ve always used them, can’t work out why anyone would want a wireless one on a desktop but Each to their own. I broke my right arm and have a plate near the wrist, I find a regular mouse painful to use when I try one but the trackball is fine.

The only problem I can see is maybe not enough movement with the ball over three monitors. Fine on one but having to reset your thumb for that bit more movement could be awkward. I can currently move the pointer over the whole screen with accuracy and not having to lift my thumb.

If you run it as an extended desktop, you can indeed have different applications displayed on each monitor. A two monitor setup is a revelation, even for office work. Think of it as having a bigger desktop, spanned across two monitors.
Since going to a two monitor setup, I could never go back to a single one.
I have a graphics card with both VGA and HDMI ourputs, 2 monitors side by side. Revolutionised my life, could never go back to a single screen now. I really need a third now.. anyone running more than 2?

I have two monitors because I do a lot of photo/video editing (but more honestly because my eyesight is crap and I have to have some stuff blown up!).

I have a good monitor for the editing and a crap one for the data where I don't need such good quality. I think it worked out cheaper to get this setup rather than one large monitor.

Just get a big enough monitor and you only need one

^ this

I used to run multiple monitors but REALLY big oes have got cheap now, (cheaper than multiple screens) so 1 big one is the way to go. They are clever, I can input more than 1 computer at the same time to the single screen so have laptop and PC running tild on the same screen

I run two screen on my system ,,blue VGA and a grey DVI plugs.
Still running W8.1 ,on the right of screen is drop down menu ,by using the Extend option ,two screens can be used at once,,one is the priority screen where all the shortcut choices show and by hold and dragging them from the top of the screen ,any new page can be drawn onto the second screen ,,Im not at all techy minded but this works ,,
I can be on here and have anything else running on the other ,this allows me to drag pages from one side onto here in seconds or copy and paste without losing the page

Storeman sums it up well. It's a case of knowing what type of input your computer will take, often HDMI in more modern machines. Once you have the right cable it's a case of plug the extra monitor in and I think the setup screen comes up, if not find the 'Display' section in the control panel and it can be setup from there. Can't be without two screen now!
I was looking into this myself & I understand you use a splitter to connect to another monitor, looked on eBay & see they are only about 5/6 quid plus a cable.
