Mushroom farming

Hi
I've been thinking about starting a smallish mushroom farm and then expanding over time. To start I think I'll probably buy in mushroom compost as it would be the easiest thing to do however I've got a lot of questions that I can't find the answers to.
Is mushroom farming a economically viable business?
What happens to the used mushroom compost?
To start would it be better to buy the compost or to make it myself?
What is the best compost mix?
Any help would be hugely appreciated

on topic the spent compost is supposedly good fert?.....marketing ,like everything, is key IMO

Yes it is a good mushroom compost ingredient

Used to be a lot of mushroom farms round here, all gone now They collected straw and bedding from stables for miles around. The spent compost was spread by local farmers but i don't think it had too much nutrients.

my mate had a mushroom farm in a disused railway tunnel they grew well in there

My mate used a lot of old Nissan huts. It was a steady job, a bit like collecting eggs but the big factory style operators took the market.

I prefer the ones out of the fields.

Could you supply a niche market with those and maybe make more profit than trying to beat mass producers at their own game?

Good idea but there's not that many of them and what kind of niche market would they fill?
